Victorian Majolica Bird & Botanical Cheese Dome – c. 1880s
This glorious Victorian majolica cheese dome is the stuff of storybook tablescapes. Rich with color, texture, and symbolism, it features hand-molded and vibrantly glazed scenes: a songbird perched on a blossoming branch, blooming irises, and scrolling motifs reminiscent of a garden in full voice.
Made in the late 19th century, likely by George Jones & Sons or a Continental competitor in the majolica style, this piece was originally designed to house and serve cheese in style—when such a thing was considered an art form. The swirling sky-blue interior, glazed base, and looped green finial are pure Victorian drama. The outer rim of the base has the signature tortoiseshell glaze and delicate repoussé scrollwork often seen in English majolica.
This is the kind of piece that tells its own story—and helps you build yours. It’s not just a cheese dome—it’s a conversation, a centerpiece, and a whimsical reminder that even the most practical object can be beautiful.
Condition:
Great antique condition. Three areas along the rim of the base plate appear to have been touched up with green paint. No cracks or structural issues. Lid fits smoothly.
Dimensions:
10" wide x 10" tall
