Palissy-Style Plaster Platter – Frogs, Snakes & Shells (c. early 1900s)
A richly detailed wall-mounted platter in the French Palissy style, attributed to the School of Paris in the early 20th century. Inspired by the work of 16th-century ceramicist Bernard Palissy, this piece features a vibrant arrangement of frogs, snakes, lizards, shells, and foliage in high relief — all modeled in the spirit of naturalist majolica.
Crafted from plaster with embedded steel supports, the platter has a beautifully muted, earthy patina and a strong presence. Age-related wear includes scattered chips, areas of missing glaze, and a partially broken snake tail — all of which contribute to its textural charm and antique character. Ivy and vine motifs frame the central scene, creating a dramatic and immersive natural tableau. A rare and striking example of Palissy revival design from the early 20th century.
