This finely drawn etching, Baudelaire With Hat, is attributed to Édouard Manet (1832–1883), a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. The work features a clean, expressive profile of poet and critic Charles Baudelaire—Manet’s contemporary and close friend—rendered with striking economy of line.

Printed in 1862 in Paris, this impression bears the mark “Imp. A. Salmon,” referring to Auguste Salmon, a well-regarded 19th-century French printer known for collaborating with avant-garde artists and publishers of the time. Salmon’s imprint signals the etching’s connection to Manet’s early period and offers added historical value, reflecting the networks of literary and artistic production in Second Empire France.

Manet’s ability to capture personality with minimal detail is on full display here. The etching is professionally matted and presented in a substantial gold gilt frame with linen backing, complementing the simplicity and elegance of the original print.

The original paper shows minor waviness, typical of antique works on paper and consistent with age.

Manet’s etchings are held in leading institutions including the Musée d'Orsay (Paris), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the National Gallery (London), and the Art Institute of Chicago. Etchings from this period have sold between $746 and $1,747 depending on subject matter, edition, and condition.
